ASTRO'S DISCO DOGHOUSE
Original Pitch by John Cawley – March 2001

BEHIND THE STORY...
When I first started to pitch at Cartoon Network, the network was trying to find new types of programming beside just series. They especially were looking for things that might create interest in older characters, as well as programming that was economical. It occurred to me a way to do both was to create some ‘cut and paste’ programming. Something that had new animation as well as clips from other shows seemed a good idea. I pitched this idea more than once, to different heads of development. The first time, they thought it sounded interesting, but did not really think a musical show would attract any interest among children. I disagreed, explaining that kids love music. Since then the market of kids music has exploded with Kidz Bop, Radio Disney cds and more. The next time I pitched it, in 2002, the head of development let it be known that the network was no longer interested in show ideas that used older characters. The network’s new direction was to be original programming. Older characters would be moved to their new network, Boomerang.

And now my pitch...

ASTRO'S DISCO DOGHOUSE

A Musical Compilation Series Proposal by John Cawley

Move over MTV, House of Blues and American Bandstand! It’s time to let this VJ dog out and let him get down as he hosts hit tunes from the Cartoon Network library.

Finally, here is place for those who love cartoon music. This series would offer a home to the many musical moments found on Cartoon Network.

Music would come from…
opening and end titles of series, songs from within shorts (from “I love to singa” and “Smile Darn Ya Smile” to “Is you is or is you ain’t my baby” and RABBIT OF SEVILLE) and series’ episodes (from Scooby Doo chases to performances by Josie and the Pussycats to Dexter’s opera), and Groovies and Shorties! (They’re not just for interstitials anymore!)

Songs would be presented in a variety of formats including their original form, with newly edited footage AND AS KARAOKE so the folks at home can sing along!

Astro, and his guests (animated and live action), will keep this house jumpin’!
