Cartoon College
Original Pitch by John Cawley – August 2000

BEHIND THE STORY...
I had just done a batch of pitches at Nickelodeon. Their head of development liked some of my ideas, but felt they weren’t what the network was looking for at the moment. I asked if they had any specific things they were seeking. The exec stated what he really wanted was a series about cartoon animal characters in school. In fact, he thought if it was a school about being a toon, perhaps taught by current cartoon characters it would be great. The exec seemed to have never heard of TINY TOON ADVENTURES, which had debuted almost a decade earlier. I did not want to spend a lot of time, so came up with this mini-pitch. I thought by making it college, and making it a real relation between the students and parents, it might be a bit more universal and bit less plagiaristic. The exec looked at the proposal and then said he really liked the idea. At our next meeting he mentioned the idea had been "passed on" as he had been told that Warner Brothers was already doing “some sort of cartoon school show”.

And now my pitch...
