Hot Play! [aka DO IT!]
Original Pitch by John Cawley – Dated March 1997

BEHIND THE STORY...
After finding my game show (Cartooniversity) ‘too old’ for Nick’s audience, I put my energies into creating a news magazine. Nick had been doing some news specials. I thought a weekly show focusing on new games, movies, and such could be successful. I envisioned it as a junior version of Entertainment Tonight. Nick and Disney both said that kids really ‘did not care’ where movies and such came from. By the year 2000, Disney Channel had added their “movie surfers” which featured kids showing how Disney movies were being made.

And now my pitch...

Hot Play! [aka DO IT!]
A hip news show focusing on children’s entertainment
An Series Proposal by John Cawley

THE SHOW

Fast paced magazine format offering news and inside information on entertainment for today’s children. This educational series will cover all aspects of how kids have fun including such areas as TV (focusing on SatAM, Kids Blocks, etc.), Comic Books, Films, Video Games, Animation, Home Video, CD-ROMS, Books, Collectibles and more. There will be interviews with celebrities. There will be behind-the-scenes of top shows and movies. There will be reports on the newest trends in games. There will be tips on collectibles. There will be visits to entertainment centers (amusement parks, arcades, etc.) There will be backstage tours of studios, computer software firms. By focusing on both what is happening and how it happens, there will be endless possibilities for entertainment and education. PARTICIPANTS

Host - A young anchor with sharp wits. The host will report stories, do interviews and act as ringmaster to the circus of information. Co-Host - An animal. (Party Animal?) It could be consistent or change regularly. It could be domestic or wild. It just won’t talk. Reporters - Outside correspondents with stories about children’s entertainment. (To be produced by outside parties.) SUGGESTED regular features

The Jury - A group of 12 kids will “judge” one property. Be it a movie, comic, video game or other entertainment, they will reach a verdict and declare, “do it” or “lose it”. [Exact terms to be finalized at later date.]

Hot Play’s Handful - The five “must do’s” of the week. These could be anything from TV shows or movies not to miss to comics and collectibles to pick up to videogames that must be played to websites that must be visited.

What’s Up - An interview with a top celebrity that focuses as much on how the celebrity does what he does as what he does.

Inside Secrets - Trips to where the entertainment is produced. From the editorial offices of comics to the stages of film production to the studios that produce animation to the programmers of video games.

Ratings vs. Reality - A look at the top five grossing films and top five rated TV shows (for children) and what “average” kids think of them.

Makes You Think... - Odd fact about a specific entertainment. It could be some weird story from a star’s past to a little known fact about a film or game or a secret room in a video game.
