TOY TIME
Original Pitch by John Cawley – August 1999

BEHIND THE STORY...
Still trying to break into some live action series, I thought about combining my idea of a ‘news show’ with a costume character. Sort of a “Barney meets Entertainment Tonight”. I hoped having the character would keep the show ‘young enough’ for Nick and Disney. Even after producing a one-minute test film, which all the development folks really liked, the idea of kids wanting to see new games, movies and such were considered a lost cause. when Cartoon Network began looking into live action series, I passed the test film to them. They thought it was "clever", but felt it came off "older" than their audience and that they did not want something so "educational" in form.

And now my pitch...

TOY TIME
A toy talks about having fun

An Series Proposal by John Cawley

Fast paced magazine format offering news and inside information on entertainment for today’s children. This series will cover all aspects of how to have fun including such areas as TV (focusing on SatAM, Kids Blocks, etc.), Comic Books, Films, Video Games, Animation, Home Video, CD-ROMS, Books, Collectibles and more. There will be interviews with celebrities. There will be behind-the-scenes of top shows and movies. There will be reports on the newest trends in games. There will be tips on collectibles. There will be visits to entertainment centers (amusement parks, arcades, etc.) There will be backstage tours of studios, computer software firms. By focusing on both what is happening and how it happens, there will be endless possibilities for entertainment and education.

SUGGESTED REGULAR FEATURES
The Jury - A group of 12 kids will “judge” one property. Be it a movie, comic, video game or other entertainment, they will reach a verdict and declare, “do it” or “lose it”.
Top Shelf - Toy’s pick of the best. These could be anything from TV shows or movies not to miss to comics and collectibles to pick up to videogames that must be played to websites that must be visited.
What’s Up - An interview with a top celebrity that focuses as much on how the celebrity does what he does as what he does.
Inside Secrets - Trips to where the entertainment is produced. From the editorial offices of comics, to the stages of film production, to the studios that produce animation to the programmers of video games.
Makes You Think... - Odd fact about a specific entertainment. It could be some weird story from a star’s past to a little known fact about a film or toy or a secret room in a video game.
