BEHIND THE STORY...
This was another one of my Hanna-Barbera celebrity series pitches. At the time Whoopi was beginning to break out as star. Hanna-Barbera liked the idea. However, they were looking for a more generic use of Whoopi, putting her in a standard situation. One they mentioned was as a private eye.
And now my pitch...
WHOOPI GOLDBERG - "Million Dollar Baby"
An Animated Series Proposal by John Cawley
Whoopi Goldberg portrays Whoopi, a down and out character who with her last dollar buys a winning lottery ticket. She finds being an instant millionaire is an uneasy situation.
Rather than take the advice of one of her friends, she decides to hide the fact that she has money. Using her new found wealth like a modern day Robin Hood, she locates those who need a helping hand and secretly assists.
Even doing good deeds turns out to be troublesome for Whoopi. She must be certain the causes and concerns she is helping are truly worthwhile. This means she gets very involved with these groups, and occasionally exposes fraudulent operations.
On top of that, when assisting small business, school groups, friends and family, she must continually hide the source of the money or help. She even discovers that money will not solve every problem.
